Albert Fairbanks was the son of Athenaeum founder Horace Fairbanks' cousin Henry. Albert died at age fifteen. This portrait was probably painted during the sitter's lifetime as a symbol of his family's pride, but was likely presented to the Athenaeum by his mother after his death as a tribute to his memory.
